SELLING and smoking ganja though illegal under
the law, is is often done openly at dances and stage shows.
However, the police are saying that there is no open season
for ganja sale or usage.
"People are not permitted to smoke is sell ganja
in public or private places. If we catch anybody, we will lock
them up," said Senior Superintendent Carl Williams, Head
of the Narcotics Division.
However, for some dance patrons, it seems as if use or
sale of ganja is permitted in dances.
"I'm wondering if ganja is still illegal. I was
at a dance recently and I saw a man walking around with something
resembling a limb from a ganja tree selling," said George*
, a patron at a dance held over the Christmas holidays.
But, Senior Superintendent Williams is maintaining that
the usage or possession of the drug is still illegal even
at dance whether it is public or private. "It is illegal
same way. That is why the police and the public are involved
in confrontation. Whenever it comes to our knowledge we act.
People have been arrested at dances when we see them smoking
weed," he said.
One promoter who wished to remain anonymous, said that
the police or private security usually conducts searches at
dances before patrons entered. "I generally use police
at my dances and they search for everything, weapons drugs every
thing," he said.
While this may be true for most stage show and dances,
open sale of ganja at dances is quite usual at many entertainment
events. |
