Multitasking
Windows 95/98 is a multitasking environment. Which means that you can run several programs at once. For example, while word pad is running , you could start other accessories like Paint (a painting program) or another application installed on your computer, then switch  among the different programs to get your work done faster. Each program will run in a separate window.
Active and Inactive are terms used to describe multiple windows opened on your desk top.

An Active window over laps the inactive window, since it is the one you are working with, it responds to your mouse movements and your key strokes. The windows default colours are Active BLUE and Inactive GRAY
